The Bass River and Deer Creek meander through central Ottawa County. Learn about the history and natural features of these bodies of water, and discover the meaning of the term "watershed." The 60-minute presentation includes information about the various types of pollution that affect the health of the Bass River and Deer Creek and easy things you can do to assure the quality of these waterways and the surrounding land. The workshop can be fine-tuned to suit the age-range and knowledge level of the audience. Bass River / Deer Creek Project Update

posted November 19, 2015 under: Bass River and Deer Creek

We had a fantastic meeting at the Ottawa Conservation District! Benjamin Jordan, the District's new watershed technician, is hitting the ground running. He updated the committee attendees on what his plans are and said he is really looking forward to making the Bass River / Deer Creek Restoration project a success. He has already created an informative postcard and sent it out to over 60 residents. As a result of that mailing, several residents are now in continued contact with him working on septic tank repair / replacement. LGROW is a proud partner with the Conservation District on this project and is looking forward to working with Benjamin to make a real difference in those watersheds.

Change in farm practices to improve water quality

posted June 11, 2015 under: Bass River and Deer Creek

LGROW has been working with the Ottawa Conservation District to determine the impacts of recent changes to farming practices in the Deer Creek Watershed. Using the STEPL model, we found that there will be a reduction of 1710.2 pounds of nitrogen, 489.2 pounds of phosphorus, 115.8 pounds of sediment, and 741.1 pounds of BOD. These reductions were the result of 289 acres of farm land using cover crops, 165 acres using crop rotation, and 164 acres using reduced tillage. A huge thank you goes out to the farms involved in improving the overalll health of the Lower Grand River Watershed!
