LGROW Seeking Summer Intern

The Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW) is looking for a student intern to perform monitoring and sampling for communities in Kent and Ottawa Counties that have Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems. The intern will utilize technical skills to take samples and record data. This data will be used by LGROW and the municipalities for regulatory reporting, outreach, and education. Applicants should be someone studying in the sciences and preparing herself/himself for a career in that field. This internship is mostly fieldwork based out of the Grand Rapids area. 

Responsibilities

  •  Complete training provided by LGROW
  •  Perform inspections of storm sewer outfalls in the Lower Grand River Watershed
  •  Perform water quality sampling
  •  Follow specified training and sampling plan
  •  Record all data
  •  Work in a team with others
  •  Assess outfalls in a timely manner, weather dependent
  •  Utilize scientific thinking to make educated hypothesis regarding water quality from the sample results
  • Participate in LGROW programs including education and outreach as they occur during the time of employment

Commitment

  • Specific assignments and required subject matter will be identified
  • LGROW will supervise assignments and review work products
  • Internship runs through Summer 2018
  • Commitment averages about 40 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Completed at least two years of college
  • Valid driver’s license and car for traveling throughout watershed
  • Proficient experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Work outdoors in and near water, occasionally in adverse conditions (e.g. rain, cold, snow, heat)
  • Driven, self-motivated, able to work independently with a positive attitude
  • Capable of making decisions by oneself
  • Works well with others, especially in a small group setting
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, thorough, and resourceful

Compensation

  • $12 per hour plus mileage reimbursement
