Coldbrook Creek Community Meeting Recap

The group went over the grant they recently received with LGROW.  The grant has 3 main objectives, laid out below, and the goal is to pursue each objective (and sub-points) in a way that is measurable. Data is needed.

  • Community

    • Identify all stakeholders in the watershed (neighborhoods, schools, etc.)

    • Recognize the diverse demographics

    • Layout the components of a comprehensive outreach plan

  • Education

    • Conduct watershed tours

    • Organize storytelling workshops to share and record local history

    • Prepare and administer classroom activities

  • Stewardship

    • Launch a citizen science brigade

    • Organize stream clean ups

    • Make recommendations for best management practices to address nonpoint source pollution

Many things have already been done toward these goals (such as creating a facebook page and newsletters, being part of LGROW's Watershed Jamboree, buckthorn removal and planting native plants in Highland Park, etc.).  Many other ideas were generated at the meeting. From those ideas these folks offered to pursue the following projects:

  • Chris and Lisa will work on a logo and brochure (they are accepting input).

  • Pete will reach out to the East Grand Rapids community, as that is home to the headwaters of the creek.

  • Mary and Joanna will contact the schools within the watershed to determine interest

There is lots of room for more folks to join in!  If any of the objectives above sound like something you want to be part of let the group know.
