EGLE to host annual medication disposal event
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is joining Michigan Pharmacists Association for their annual medication collection event at the Capitol in Lansing.
The collection event is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tues., Sept. 17, on the Capitol lawn in downtown Lansing. An 11 a.m. press conference will take place in the same location.
Michigan residents and employees are encouraged to clean out their household medicine cabinets and bring unused, unwanted or expired medications for proper disposal. Proper drug disposal helps prevent drug abuse and accidental poisonings, and assists in preserving the state’s natural resources.
The event will allow residents to safely discard controlled substances, narcotics and other unwanted prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications at the collection tent. Residents can also use the drive-through drop-off tent at the intersection of Capitol and Michigan avenues. Collected medications will be sent for incineration so the active drug components are destroyed.
Michiganders who cannot attend are encouraged to use the EGLE interactive Household Drug Take Back Map at Michigan.gov/EGLEDrugDisposal. The map allows residents to enter their ZIP code to find nearby collection locations. EGLE also offers a short MiEnviroMINUTE YouTube video to help increase awareness about the importance of proper drug disposal.
