Grand River Revitalization Upper Reach Open House
Construction for the Grand River Revitalization Project is set to begin this summer, marking the first of two phases. The “Lower Reach” phase, which could start as early as June 1st, will focus on four low-head dams between the I-196 bridge and Pearl Street.
The following “Upper Reach” phase will address the removal of the aging 6th Street Dam. This stage requires close coordination with federal partners, as the dam currently serves as a barrier preventing the spread of invasive sea lamprey—parasitic fish that harm native species in the Grand River. The proposed project details a new sea lamprey barrier which blocks the invasive lamprey, while allowing for passage of native fish.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the federal lead on the Upper Reach project, will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). In preparation for the EIS draft, they are hosting a public open house where community members can speak with project experts, share input, and suggest alternatives for consideration. Please join project partners at a public meeting if you would like to learn more about the Upper Reach project, or have any questions or comments regarding the removal of the 6th Street Dam.
The public scoping meeting will be held:
