National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
Improperly disposing of unwanted medications either by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash represents an emerging concern for the environment and public health.
Medications that end up in landfills eventually seep into the area ground water. Those flushed down the toilet pass through the sewage treatment plants and then are released into the waterways.
Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem particularly with teens and young adults. The medications are legal and easy to get. They often come from home or the home of a relative or friend. Many who misuse these drugs mistakenly believe they are safer than illegal drugs.
Medications thrown in the trash can be stolen and used possibly causing illness or death. Children and pets could find them which could lead to unintentional poisonings. Medicines thrown away with personal information on the labels could result in identity theft.

Free event to collect hazardous waste and keep it from entering and harming our environment!
Don’t pour paint, solvent, medicine, automotive oil, or chemicals down the drain or dump them in the trash where they may end up in our drinking water and lakes!
Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste accepted Includes aqueous acids and bases; oil-based paints; reactives; solvents; aerosol cans; automotive liquids; pesticides (liquids and solids); automotive batteries; alkaline, nickel-cadmium and/or silver oxide batteries; liquid cleaners; heavy metal solutions; mercury-containing articles; motor oil.
We Cannot Accept: asbestos; electronics, latex paint (when dry it can go to the landfill); propane tanks; commercially generated waste; radioactive material; explosives; unknown wastes; console and projection televisions; speakers in wooden cases; tires heavily caked with dirt.
Medications
Medications need to be in their original containers with the name of the drug clearly labeled. Cross out any personal information on the containers.

Medication Disposal Event at the Capitol

Time
Medications can be dropped off from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. A press conference is typically held at 11 a.m.

Drop-off Instructions
Keep pharmaceuticals in their original container since the labels may contain safety information. In addition, the container is chemically compatible, and caps are typically water tight and child proof. Scratch out, cover with tape or use permanent marker to make personal information unreadable. Medications can be dropped off at the tent on the south Capitol lawn or there will be a drop-off tent located at Capitol Avenue and Michigan Avenue for your convenience.

The Medication Disposal Event @ the Capitol is held in conjunction with MPA's annual Pharmacy Day at the Capitol, an event designed to educate legislators and their staffs on the vital role pharmacists play on the healthcare team. Volunteers pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have one-on-one time during wellness demonstrations with Michigan's lawmakers to discuss important pharmacy issues and provide expertise in the following areas:
